Opening statement

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

Now that I’m entering my final year at the University of Chester, and my studies in graphic design are nearing an end, it has given me the opportunity to reflect upon my experiences, skills and interests from the previous years. To record this journey, I will be providing a personal documentation of my final moments as a third-year design student.

Towards the end of my second-year studies, I established a strong interest towards children’s illustration. In a project last year, I produced a short illustrated story based on the theme of night. I experimented with the playfulness of this subject, creating fun and imaginative illustrations for children. This project allowed me to be my most creative and authentic self. I enjoyed being pushed creatively outside of my comfort zone. It was the first time in my practice, where I felt fully in my element. From this moment, I knew illustration was my destined path. Therefore for my final year, I’d like to explore the diversity of this topic to a greater extent. Once I leave university I have the aim of becoming a freelance children’s illustrator. My aim is to take all the opportunities I can, by building relevant experience in this field.

'The Expedition' Children's illustrations I worked on last year. This is where I was first introduced into children's illustration

This year I am determined to refine and build up my current portfolio, by displaying more examples of illustration. This will provide future employers with an understanding of where my skillsets lie. Although I have determined my main interests, I’m still going to keep my options open, as I don’t want to limit myself. I can’t predict where this year will take me.

I’d also like to build upon my networking skills as this is an important quality to have in this industry. Working as a children’s illustrator is based upon making contacts and building a name and reputation for yourself. I would also like to expand my understanding about freelancing, by researching into copyright, tax and other relevant topics. In the past, I've purposely shied away from these subjects because of their complexity. My aim is to find out what it takes to succeed as an illustrator. I'm a determined and conscientious individual who works hard in every task they set themselves to. This year, I’m open to learn, develop my work and take challenges. I think these are important attributes to have in an interest as such, as children’s illustration is a very competitive field to work in.
