Live Brief - 'Meeting Places' - Part 2

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

In my last post, I discussed my opportunity to work alongside the law department in a live brief called 'meeting places'. The department were seeking to find individuals who would help them create some postcards for a local food bank. I briefly spoke about my ambitions and skills which I wanted to gain through working on this collaborative project. Since our last team's discussion, I've been busy creating some initial illustrations and drafts for the designs. Whilst I'm still waiting on the legal information, for the time being, the law department have kindly provided us with a list of topics. They have also supplied us with a list of criteria and requirements for the designs. With this all said, I thought I'd provide an update on this project by showing my current progress.

In our teams discussion, the department outlined the 5 different topics for the postcard designs:

-Joint obligations

-Abusive behaviour

-Children

-Housing

-Neighbourhood disputes

They also provided a brief criteria for how the designs should be perceived:

-Eye-catching appearance - the reader can easily access the information

-Relevant to the reader

-Easily understandable- designs need to be simple, clear and concise

-Effective in the sense that people won't dispose of them

The illustrations above are based upon the following topics- Housing and Neighbourhood disputes. I've followed their requirements and centred on the theme of simplicity, rather than a style which is overcomplicated and draws attention away from the text. Over the three years of my course, I've learnt about the power of simplicity. More specifically, how it outweighs the most decorative designs. Therefore, I wanted the drawings to be clear as possible. I also experimented with colour, opting for a neutral palette rather than something visually overwhelming. My lecturer advised that me and my classmate approach this project as though it's an editorial brief. Therefore, I based the illustrations from the text they gave.

I'm hoping to create more of these illustrations in the upcoming weeks, ready to start designing the postcards. The topics which I illustrate will vary. My biggest challenge will be finding a way to represent the more sensitive topics through my illustrations.
